Sommelier diary #40

2014 Barolo “Romirasco” – Aldo Conterno
A brooding Barolo from a cool, contemplative vintage, Romirasco 2014 unfolds slowly with a noble and traditional character. The bouquet opens on dried roses, sour cherry and tar before revealing earthier layers of porcini, iron and tobacco. The palate is firm, taut and architectural, driven by Nebbiolo’s signature acidity and long-grained tannins. Serious and uncompromising, it is a wine that speaks less of charm and more of authenticity and terroir truth. Built for long aging and quiet reflection. Corked Points: 96

2019 Il Pino di Biserno – 750ml
Polished yet controlled, the 2019 Il Pino di Biserno delivers the elegance of Upper Maremma Bordeaux blends without slipping into excess. Aromas of blackcurrant, bay leaf and crushed violets glide into a plush but balanced palate of ripe fruit, fine tannins and discreet oak. There’s a graphite edge for complexity and coastal freshness that keeps the wine lively. Seductive in its youth but with the bones to develop. Corked Points: 94

2019 Il Pino di Biserno – Magnum
In magnum, the wine shows another dimension entirely—darker fruit, cooler aromatics and greater structural persistence. Cabernet Franc stands tall, giving the wine a vertical profile marked by hints of peppercorn, violets and pencil shavings. More tightly wound than the standard bottle, it feels disciplined and ageworthy, with a long mineral finish that promises a graceful evolution. A wine with tension and purpose. Corked Points: 95+

2022 Flor di Uis – Vie di Romans
A beautifully judged Friulian white that balances perfume and precision without flashiness. The nose is bright and inviting with notes of white peach, lime zest, chamomile and sea spray. The blend—Malvasia Istriana, Friulano and Riesling—creates both aromatic lift and subtle complexity, while the palate remains textural yet clean, with a mineral line that gives definition. Poised, gastronomic and quietly distinctive. Corked Points: 92
