Sommeliers Diary #54

2020 Tignanello, Marchesi Antinori

The 2020 Tignanello strikes a beautifully judged balance between richness and vertical tension — a vintage that feels both generous and impressively composed. The nose opens with dark cherry, black plum, and wild herbs, lifted by touches of violet, cedar, and warm spice. There is a quiet graphite note beneath the fruit, giving the wine a cool, polished backbone.

On the palate, the wine is sleek and finely layered, its ripe fruit carried by vibrant acidity that stretches the wine upward rather than outward. The tannins are firm but elegantly grained, guiding flavours of cherry, blood orange, and subtle tobacco with seamless clarity. As it opens, a touch of cocoa and savoury earth appear, adding depth without sacrificing precision.

The finish is long and harmoniously shaped, lingering with dark fruit, spice, and a gentle mineral shadow. A poised, modern Tignanello — expressive but never showy, already compelling yet clearly built for the long run.

2023 Bolgheri Rosso, Michele Satta

The 2023 Bolgheri Rosso from Michele Satta is vivid, pure, and delightfully expressive — a coastal red that captures the breezy lift and herbal Mediterranean nuance of its origin. The nose is bright and inviting: red plum, cherry, and blackberry mingle with fresh sage, laurel, and a hint of crushed stones. Everything feels clean-edged and buoyant.

On the palate, the wine moves with youthful energy. The fruit is crisp and lively, supported by refreshing acidity and finely knit tannins that give structure without heaviness. Notes of red berries, blackcurrant leaf, and subtle spice play across a cool mineral line that keeps the wine focused. There’s a sense of natural ease here — a wine shaped more by elegance than power.

The finish is fresh, supple, and gently savoury, echoing herbs, red fruit, and a touch of saline lift. A beautifully balanced, direct, and charmingly drinkable expression of Bolgheri, capturing the clarity and finesse of the 2023 vintage.
