The Story of Stags Leap Winery: A Napa Valley Icon

Stags Leap Winery is a testimony to the region’s strong winemaking heritage and international recognition, situated in the centre of California’s Napa Valley. This estate, which is well-known for its grace, superb wines, and fascinating past, has been instrumental in making Napa Valley one of the world’s most prestigious wine areas.

The Beginning of a Tradition

When Horace Chase & Mary Isabella Chase planted the first vines on the property in 1893, the history of Stags Leap Winery officially began. As the name of the winery and its unique label were inspired by the story of a deer that jumped to safety on the surrounding palisades, the estate was appropriately named after the legend. The property has undergone multiple ownership changes over the years, with each owner adding to its history.

When Carl Doumani acquired the land in 1970, he set about turning it into a famous winery. Doumani’s vision had a key role in maintaining the estate’s ancient structures and highlighting the creation of premium wines that highlighted the Stags Leap District’s distinctive terroir.

The 1976 Paris Judgement

The renowned 1976 Paris Judgement solidified Stags Leap Winery’s historical position. California wines were compared to some of France’s most prestigious labels in this blind test. A Cabernet Sauvignon from Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, a nearby winery that is sometimes mistaken for Stags Leap Winery, shocked the world wine community by defeating its French rivals and demonstrating that Napa Valley wines could compete with the best in the world. The tasting improved the district’s standing overall, including that of its namesake winery, even though Stags Leap Winery was not a direct participant.

The Terroir of Excellence

The Stags Leap District is renowned for its distinctive blend of temperate climate, cooling San Pablo Bay breezes, and volcanic soils. These factors come together to produce ideal growth conditions for Bordeaux varietals, especially Cabernet Sauvignon. By making the most of this terroir, Stags Leap Winery creates wines that are sophisticated, well-balanced, and representative of the region.

The Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon, the winery’s flagship offering, is renowned for its complex flavour profile and rich, velvety texture, which includes notes of cocoa, black fruit, and a touch of spice.

Their Chardonnay, which exhibits a pleasing harmony of fruit and acidity, and Petite Sirah, a powerful and strong wine that honours the estate’s early plantings of this variety, are two other noteworthy choices.

Stags Leap Winery has dedicated itself to the craft of winemaking for the entirety of its existence. Their strategy places a strong emphasis on small-lot fermentation, careful vineyard care, and a profound regard for custom. The winery’s commitment to quality and its relationship to the land are reflected in every bottle. Constructed in 1890, the historic Manor House is the focal point of the property and provides guests with an insight into the winery’s rich history. In addition to tasting the wines that have made Stags Leap Winery a Napa Valley institution, tours and tastings offer an immersive experience that lets visitors explore the vineyards and cellars.

The variety and calibre of Stags Leap Winery’s vineyards are reflected in the various cuvées they create.

Artemis is a Cabernet Sauvignon cuvée made by combining fruit from other upscale Napa Valley farms with grapes from the Stags Leap District. It provides a distinctive harmony between elegance and richness.

Cask 23: Made from the best estate-grown fruit, this limited-edition Cabernet Sauvignon exhibits remarkable depth, complexity, and ageing potential.

SLV (Stag’s Leap Vineyard): This Cabernet Sauvignon cuvée, which comes from just one vineyard, showcases the unique qualities of the volcanic soils found on the SLV estate.

FAY: This single-vineyard wine highlights the softer, fruitier facets of the estate’s terroir and is named for Nathan Fay, the pioneer who planted Cabernet Sauvignon in the region.

Stags Leap Winery still maintains its standing as a trailblazer and innovator in the fine wine industry today. Its dedication to excellence, innovation, and sustainability guarantees that its legacy will last for many decades.
