Etna Rosso Monteleone is part of the new wave of Etna producers championing the pure expression of the volcano’s unique terroir. Sourced from vineyards on the northeastern slopes of Mount Etna and dominated by Nerello Mascalese (with a dash of Nerello Cappuccio), this 2023 vintage captures the cooler climate energy and volcanic minerality that define great Etna reds.
On the nose, the wine greets you with fresh red cherry, wild strawberry and pomegranate, lifted by floral hints of violet and a distinct waft of crushed basalt and dusty earth. Subtle notes of cedar, clove and Mediterranean herbs add complexity without obscuring the primary fruit. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant, with juicy red fruit framed by lively acidity and fine, chalky tannins that reflect the vineyards’ volcanic soils. A thread of saline minerality carries through to a long, poised finish, where echoes of wild herbs and spice linger.
This is Etna Rosso in a bright, expressive register — immediate in its appeal, yet structured with enough tension to evolve with a few years in bottle.
