Sommelier diary #76

Marchesi Antinori is one of Italy’s most influential wine dynasties, with a history stretching back over six centuries and a defining role in shaping modern Tuscan fine wine. At Tenuta Tignanello in the heart of Chianti Classico, the family created Solaia as a bold, terroir-driven Super Tuscan, produced only in exceptional vintages from the estate’s highest vineyard parcels.
The 2017 Solaia in magnum shows remarkable poise despite the warm, dry vintage, offering concentrated aromas of blackcurrant, dark cherry and blackberry layered with graphite, cedar, tobacco and subtle Mediterranean herbs. The palate is powerful yet polished, with dense but refined tannins, vibrant freshness and a long, savoury finish of cocoa, spice and crushed stone; in magnum, the wine’s balance and ageing potential feel especially assured.
