Sommelier diary #109

2022 Bianco Secco – Giuseppe Quintarelli
Giuseppe Quintarelli’s Bianco Secco is one of the most distinctive Italian white wines: a rare, highly structured blend from a producer better known for his reds and amarones, yet treated with the same meticulous attention to vineyard and cellar. The 2022 vintage yielded expressive fruit with clarity and ripe energy, and in Quintarelli’s hands this translates into a white of both intensity and poise.
The blend typically centres on Riesling Renano and Chardonnay, with smaller portions of Friulano and other local varieties, giving the wine aromatic breadth and textural complexity.
On the nose, the wine opens with bright, crystalline aromas of lemon zest, white peach and green apple, layered with jasmine blossom, wet stone and delicate herbal notes that hint at its Italian terroir. With air, subtle honeyed nuances and a whisper of orange rind emerge, adding depth without sweetness. The palate is substantial yet finely balanced: vivid acidity gives lift to concentrated citrus and orchard fruit, while a core of saline minerality and gentle phenolic grip keeps the texture taut and structured. The finish is long and resonant, carrying echoes of citrus oil, chalk and a faint savoury spice.
This is a white wine of real presence — intense and layered, yet shaped by clarity and precision.
