2006 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Clos du Pape – Paul Avril
Paul Avril’s Clos du Pape is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most evocative wines, marrying the appellation’s traditional power with an almost Burgundian sense of nuance. The 2006 vintage was cooler and more structured than its more generous neighbours, producing wines of delineation, fine tannins and persistent minerality — and in Clos du Pape this precision has unfolded beautifully over time.
On the nose, there’s a captivating mix of black cherry, kirsch and bramble fruit, evolving with age into notes of dried herbs, Provençal garrigue, leather and forest floor. There’s also a savory hint of smoked bacon and black olive tapenade that adds complexity without heaviness. The palate is remarkable for its balance: medium-full yet poised, with ripe but refined tannins framing concentrated dark fruit and an undercurrent of spice, earth and mineral grip. Acidity remains fresh for the vintage, giving lift through a long, elegant finish that echoes tobacco leaf, dried herbs and a whisper of pepper.
This is mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape at its best — developed, layered and beautifully expressive, with plenty of lingering vibrancy despite its age.
