Sommelier diary #75

Gaja is the estate that redefined modern Barbaresco, transforming a historic family winery in Piedmont into a global benchmark through an uncompromising focus on quality, terroir and long-term vision. Rooted in Barbaresco village since the mid-19th century, the Gaja family has consistently pushed boundaries while remaining deeply respectful of Nebbiolo’s noble traditions.
The 1970 Barbaresco from Gaja is a profound, fully mature expression of Nebbiolo, offering haunting aromas of dried rose petals, tar, truffle and forest floor, layered with notes of sour cherry, orange peel and sweet tobacco. On the palate it is graceful and resolved, with silky, melting tannins, gentle acidity and a long, savoury finish that echoes with dried herbs, leather and earthy complexity, speaking quietly but authoritatively of both place and time.
