Sommelier diary #86

1999 Flaccianello della Pieve – Fontodi
The 1999 Flaccianello is a memorable expression of 100% Sangiovese from Fontodi’s iconic single-vineyard bottling, crafted in the famed Conca d’Oro of Panzano. Unlike some more powerful vintages, 1999 stands out for its elegant structure and vivacious natural acidity, traits that have helped it age gracefully over more than two decades.
In the glass it shows a deep ruby-garnet hue with hints of maturity. The nose opens to complex layers of ripe black cherry, plum and violet florals, intertwined with savory notes of tobacco, spice box and leather that speak to extended bottle age.

On the palate the wine remains firm and concentrated, with lively acidity balancing plush dark fruit, dried herbs and mineral undertones. Tannins are refined but still present, giving a silky texture and lingering finish framed by subtle spice and earth.
