Sommelier Diary #91

2018 Piodilei Chardonnay – Pio Cesare
Piodilei is Pio Cesare’s flagship single-vineyard Chardonnay, crafted to rival the finest whites of Burgundy while expressing the unique soils and climate of the Langhe. The 2018 vintage, marked by a long, warm growing season, brought both ripeness and elegance, resulting in a wine that is generous yet precise, rich yet balanced.
On the nose, aromas of ripe citrus, white peach, and hints of tropical fruit are complemented by delicate notes of vanilla, almond and subtle toasted oak, giving the wine both freshness and complexity. The palate is full-bodied and creamy, yet structured with bright acidity and a firm mineral backbone. Layers of stone fruit, citrus, and a touch of spice carry through to a long, focused finish that hints at the wine’s excellent ageing potential.
A Chardonnay of elegance and power, Piodilei 2018 is expressive now but built to develop further complexity over the next decade.
Corked Points: 93/100
