Sommelier diary #104

2015 Opus One – Napa Valley
The 2015 Opus One stands as one of the most refined vintages of this iconic Napa Valley Bordeaux-style blend. Produced from near-perfect growing conditions — warm days, cool nights and slow, even ripening — the wine combines depth of fruit with precision and balance, showcasing both varietal definition and the estate’s hallmark elegance.
Typical of Opus One, the blend for 2015 centres on Cabernet Sauvignon (≈80%), supported by Merlot (≈10–12%), Cabernet Franc (≈4–6%), Petit Verdot (≈3–4%) and a hint of Malbec (≈1%), a composition that delivers structure, aromatic complexity and refined texture.
On the nose, the wine opens with a compelling bouquet of blackcurrant, blueberry and plum, layered with notes of graphite, cedar and lavender. Subtle hints of violet, baking spice and dark chocolate add nuance without overwhelming the core fruit. The palate is plush yet structured, with concentrated dark fruit framed by polished tannins and vibrant acidity that gives lift and drive. Mineral undertones and hints of tobacco leaf thread through to a long, resonant finish where cassis, spice and gentle earthiness linger.
This is Opus One at both expressive and poised — generous in fruit yet underpinned by balance and focus, rewarding both early drinking and medium-term ageing.
Corked Points: 96/100
