A renowned winegrower has passed away in Piedmont. Owner of the Paolo Scavino winery Enrico Scavino, 82, passed away on February 25 following what appeared to be surgical complications.

During the 1990s, Scavino was a member of the “Barolo Boys,” a group of vintners whose interpretation of Barolo made using contemporary methods rocked the area. Their modern takes on Piedmont’s famous red garnered media attention all around the world. Nonetheless, Scavino’s Barolos never depended heavily on new French wood for ageing, in contrast to several other wines made during that era. He also watched the vineyard closely at all times. He aimed for elegance and balance, which are characteristics that his wines still have today.
