The Kühling-Gillot Story
The expansive vineyards of Weingut Kühling-Gillot were bathed in a golden glow on a crisp October morning. Carolin Spanier-Gillot, the current custodian of the family estate, moved among the vines with a silent respect as the mist dissipated from the undulating hills. Ripe and heavy, the grapes were ready to be picked.

Carolin stopped, stroking the fruit with her fingers, sensing the spirit of the place that had raised them. Every taste of wine from this area was a distillation of history, love, and dedication, which went beyond dirt and stone.
Long before Carolin’s time, the Kühling-Gillot saga started. The Kühling and Gillot families initially established themselves in Rheinhessen in the late 1800s, attracted by the region’s distinctive terroir and the potential for excellent wine. The families devotedly tended their vineyards over many centuries, and their estates gained notoriety. Following their marriage in 1970, the two estates established Weingut Kühling-Gillot, a winery dedicated to producing wines that authentically reflected their area.
Accepting the Wisdom of Nature
Growing up surrounded by grapes, Carolin learnt from her father the patience and craftsmanship needed to produce excellent wine. She did, however, carry her own vision. After assuming control, she implemented biodynamic methods because she believed that the best wine was produced by honouring the rhythms of nature. Kühling-Gillot’s vineyards flourished under her direction, and the estate’s style was characterised by its exquisite Pinot Noirs and lively, mineral-rich Rieslings.
Each vineyard had a unique tale to tell, and Kühling-Gillot’s most coveted locations were the crown jewels: the steep hillsides of Nierstein’s “Roter Hang,” with its distinctive red slate soil, yielded wines with remarkable character and depth. The Oppenheim vineyards offered sophisticated expressions that struck a balance between elegance and force, adding another level of complexity. These unique microclimates left their mark on the wines, which reflected Rheinhessen’s spirit.
Harvest and Community
At Kühling-Gillot, harvest was a time for both labour and celebration. The rustle of leaves in the crisp autumn breeze blended with the laughter of families, friends, and labourers from far and wide as they gathered in the fields. With her sleeves rolled up, Carolin stood among them, telling stories and boosting their spirits. The spirit of the winery—a community bound together by a love of wine and care for the land—came to life in this peaceful partnership.
The first harvest day came to an end as the sun sank below the horizon. With their hands crimson from the grapes, the crew assembled in the courtyard. They passed out glasses of Kühling-Gillot Riesling, each drop a tribute to the region they loved and each taste a reward for their hard work. Carolin’s voice was warm with appreciation as she raised her glass.
