Founded in 1113, the abbey of Ferté was the first of its kind to be constructed in Citeaux. Givry’s vineyards were established and cared for swiftly by the monks who resided there. The Thenard family purchased the abbey in 1793 and had the good fortune to inherit some of the abbey’s vineyards.
Due in part to its clay and limestone soil but also to its exposed southern and southeast slopes, Givry has long been known for producing wines of the highest calibre.
One such wine is the Premier Cru “La Servoisine,” which was once owned by monks and traces its history to the 18th century, when it was known as “Em Sarvoignenes.”
10,000 vines are planted on each of the 6.25 acres of Domaine de la Ferté, of which 2.5 acres are home to some of the appellation’s most well-known Premiers Crus. High-quality wine is guaranteed by the Burgundian tradition of having a high density of vines per acre. The grapes are harvested with extreme caution, expertise, and minimal application of chemical treatments. The vineyards are 35 years old on average.
